Jacqueline Haines Calhoun Hoffman, 94, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2015.
Born December 26, 1920, in Detroit, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Roy Haines and Leone Harriet England Haines. Her family moved to Ontario, Canada when she was ten years old and after completing her education, moved back to Detroit.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband, Arnett Russell “Cal” Calhoun, 1962; son, William Franklin Calhoun, 1990; daughter, Patricia Calhoun Kunk, 2009; and second husband, of thirty-eight years, Harold Emmerson Hoffman in 2002.
She is survived by grandson, Scott Michel Calhoun; great grandchildren, Avery and Fern Calhoun of Ohio; granddaughter, Julie Calhoun Merchant; step-daughter, Kathleen Leist and husband Randy of Westchester, OH; step-son, Richard Hoffman and wife Jan of Findlay, OH; son-in-law, Michael Kunk of West Carrolton, OH and several great and step-grandchildren.
Jackie is the former county auditor in Urbana, OH, Champaign County. She is an honorary Life Member of the County Auditor’s Association – State of Ohio. Jackie subsequently moved to Florida, where she and her husband, Harold, purchased and operated a 60-unit Travelodge Motel, adjoining the campus of Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL, for ten years. They then moved to St. Petersburg, FL, where she became involved with the St. Petersburg Women’s Club. Shortly thereafter they purchased a summer home on Lake Chatuge in Hayesville, NC; visiting there every summer for five years until they found a home in Franklin, NC in 1985. Jackie organized and founded the Federated Franklin Women’s Club, Franklin, NC, in 1988 with 45 charter members. She was nominated as “Clubwoman with Heart” in 2008 and was recognized at the State Convention. She was recently awarded a Gold Membership for having served fifty-plus years in the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 6th in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Tom Fisher will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
