Obituary for John George Underwood

John George  Underwood
John George Underwood, Jr., 67, of Franklin, passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2008.

Born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, he was the son of the late John George Underwood, Sr. and Ann Smith Underwood. He was preceded in death by a brother Albert Underwood. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Panama Canal Zone and was an expert in Jungle Warfare. John was a pitcher for the J.F. Kennedy League Baseball Team and traveled throughout Central and South America and had the most strike outs. He was recruited by the St. Louis Cardinals to join them at spring training camp in Sarasota, Florida but due to contracting malaria could not fulfill his contract. He then entered the Ministry of Correctional Service in Ontario. He completed his B.A. in Correctional Recreation and became the Recreational Director for the Millbrook Maximum Correction facility. He was a member of the Ontario Provincial Police Auxiliary. He and his family moved to Sarasota, FL and he became a detective in the C.I.B. Division of the Sarasota Sheriff’s Dept. He served as the S.H.O.C.A.P. Director for the Sarasota Sheriff’s Dept. John moved to Franklin in 2001. He worked at Harrah’s Casino as a Surveillance Officer. He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of American Smoky Mountain Chapter 994 and was of the Catholic faith.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Christine Moore Underwood; four children, Peter Underwood and wife Melissa of Atlanta, GA, Holly Lex and husband Ron of Franklin, Scott Underwood and wife Tammy of North Port, FL, Robert Underwood and wife Annette of Arcadia, FL; six grandchildren, Adam Underwood, Jessie Underwood, Jacob Underwood, John Lex, Melanie Lex and Dylon Underwood; one great grandson, Dustin Spates; and many nieces and nephews.

A Private Service will be held at a later date.
