Obituary for Diane Holzlohner (von Egidy)

Diane Holzlohner (von Egidy)
Diane Holzlohner, 86, of St. Simons Island, GA, passed away on Thursday, June 16, 2016. Born in Chicago, IL on January 9, 1930, she was the daughter of Walter von Egidy and Arlene Helen Pellett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by son, Scott Holzlohner and her husband Richard Holzlohner.

Diane Martha Lily von Egidy lived an idyllic childhood on a farm in Stamford, CT, learning from her grandmother how to sew, playing the piano, and discovering her love for animals. She moved to West Palm Beach, FL, as a teenager and graduated from Palm Beach High School in 1947. In 1949 she married James Robert Park. They had four children.

In 1959 Diane became a single parent, working several jobs at a time, before honing in on what would become her career. After working as a tailor on prestigious Worth Avenue, Diane turned her love for sewing into a business in the 1960’s, opening a clothing store in West Palm Beach called Ms. Diane’s Fashions, where she specialized in designing wedding gowns. For Diane, being a master dressmaker was more than a skill, it was an art. She was the original wedding planner, a woman ahead of her time. She designed both the wedding gown and the entire bridal party and would be at the wedding assisting the bride and family with everything from flowers, photographers, caterers and last minute stitches to providing smelling salts.

In 1962, Diane was introduced to Richard Holzlohner and his two sons at a local pharmacy soda fountain. Richard would proclaim daily, “the best thing I ever did was walk into Henry’s Drug Store”. He was the love of her life. They married and their two families became one happy one.

In 1990, Diane and Richard moved to her dream house in Otto, North Carolina where they resided happily for over 20 years. During that time, Diane was an active member of the Women’s Guild of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Franklin. Diane and her husband also were volunteers for the Women Infants and Children’s (WIC) program in Cherokee, NC for over 14 years. She was known as Mrs. Claus as she and Richard would year round secure donations from local businesses of children’s clothing, toys, games and more and would wrap sometimes over 600 Christmas presents for the WIC children and deliver them to Cherokee as Santa’s helpers. In 1998, Diane was recognized nationally for her service as the recipient of the National Association of WIC Directors Friend of WIC Leadership Award in Denver, Colorado.

Diane is survived by five of her children: Vicki and Tom Lewis of Franklin, NC; James Robert Park, Jr of Dillard, GA; Michelle Park and Jody Stowers of St. Augustine Beach, FL; Wayne and Donna Holzlohner of Matthews NC; Dana and Jim Manning of St. Simons Island, GA; and very special family friends Bruce and Marie Bonneau of Phoenix, AZ, Phil and Joan Johnsen of Tallahassee, FL; Roseann and Doug Banner of Columbia, SC; Ewell Pope of St. Simons Island, GA; and Marty and Ken Greeble of Otto, NC. Diane is also survived by her mother, Mae von Egidy of Bridgewater, CT and her siblings: Dennis and Angie von Egidy of New Salem, NC; Lynn von Egidy and Ronnie Levine of Queens, NY; Randy and Patty Evelyn of Wellington, FL; Walter and Wendy von Egidy of Bridgewater, CT. Diane leaves behind 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 6 nephews and 10 great nieces and nephews. She will be remembered with love by them all.

Diane’s family wishes to acknowledge the thoughtful and loving care of the staff of The Jolley House at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, Ga. She loved her caregivers and her family will always remember their kindness.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 23rd from 6 to 8 pm at Macon Funeral Home, Franklin, NC.

A memorial mass will be held at 11 am on Friday June 24th at St. Frances of Assisi Catholic Church, Franklin, NC followed by a graveside service at Mulberry Methodist Church in Otto, NC. Afterwards, guests are invited to join the family for a celebration of her life at Diane’s “mountain home”. Online condolences can be made at maconfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to Hospice of The Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525 or Hospice House Foundation of WNC, 272 Maple Street, Franklin, NC 28734.
