James Bernard Roper, 89, of Franklin, passed away on Monday, June 19, 2017.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Leland Roper and Mary Welch Roper. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Wilma Daisy Edwards Roper. James was elected twelve times to the Macon County Soil and Water Conservation District Board and worked as a butcher and ran the delivery route for Franklin Frozen Foods for many years. He enjoyed farming, gardening and helping Wilma in canning and freezing.
James was a member of Iotla Baptist Church and served on the building and grounds committee.

He is survived by two daughters, Martha Holbrook and husband Jim and Marilyn Fouts and husband Jim both of Franklin; three grandchildren, Matthew Holbrook and wife Aimee, Michael Tallent and wife Cassie and Chad Shuler and six great grandchildren, Waylon Holbrook, Hawk Holbrook, Kayla Shuler, Gage Shuler, Nivia Tallent and Breanna Tallent.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, June 25th, at Iotla Baptist Church. Rev. Steve Reeves and Rev. Brandon Breedlove will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2-3:00 p.m., prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be George Roper, Jim Rogers, George Lynch, Stan Penland, Mike Breedlove, Tommy Bennett, Dan Cansler and Tony Ledford. The John Campbell Bible Class will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Iotla Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 1537 Iotla Church Road, Franklin, NC 28734.
