Obituary for Ernest Childers

Ernest Childers
James “Ernest” Childers, 92, of Franklin, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2018.

Born in Swain County, NC, he was the son of the late Candler Childers and Nannie Holbrook Childers. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Annie Lois Shields Childers who died April 16, 2011. Ernest volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corp at 17 years old during WWII. He was an active member of Cowee Baptist Church since 1947, serving as deacon, Sunday School teacher, chairman of several committees and was very active with the Brotherhood. He was a member of Farm Bureau, NC Cattleman’s Association, Junaluskee Masonic Lodge, and was very involved with the FFA.

Ernest based his life on God’s teachings of true respect, hard work and love. He found great joy in strengthening relationships, believed in the power of positivity and humbly submitting oneself to the Lord to be shaped and molded. Some of his favorite hobbies were farming, taking naps under the stars and enjoying banana pudding with friends and family. He will be remembered and cherished by his family and friends as an outstanding husband, father, grandfather, unkie, teacher, co-worker, supervisor, friend and child of God.

He is survived by his daughter, Margaret Childers Revis and husband Jerry of Raleigh, NC; two sisters, Jean Childers of Whittier and Betty Wills of Chesapeake, VA; brother, Alden Childers of Whittier; two grandchildren, Kyle Revis and Payton Revis both of Raleigh, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 21, at Cowee Baptist Church. Pastor Jason Smith, Pastor Ronnie Branson and Pastor Charles Stevens will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Bill Parrish, Bill McGaha, Larry Penland, Terry Cabe, Keith Parker and Bill Fouts.

Memorial donations can be made to the Cowee Baptist Church Building Fund or Cemetery Fund, C/O Kaye Rickman, 240 Golfview Drive, Franklin, NC 28734.
