Dear Gloria and family. Always enjoyed Bill being a big part of our crew on all of the National flights over so many years. What a "gentleman" he was. Our NAL Franklin Picnics just won't be the same. I flew with Bill several times as first officer and later as Capt. on the 727. He was a fine engineer and a fine gentleman. I also flew with Gloria many times. During one of the strikes at National in the early 70's Bill, Sig Hauck and I built an addition on a house down in South Miami as a way to make a little money until NAL went back to flying again. I think we probably drank up most of our profit in Gatorade since it was pretty hot on the job. My kindest regards to Gloria and his family, Jim Robertson

For Bill: As taken from NAL Central Buccanees Website: Aviators' Heaven: I hope there's a place way up in the sky, where old flyers can go on the day they die. A place where a guy can buy a cold beer, for a friend and a comrade, whose memory is dear. A place where no doctor or lawyer can tread, nor an FAA type would e'erbe caught dead. Just a quaint little place, kind of dark, full of smoke, where they like to sing loud, and love a good joke. The kind of a place where a lady could go, and feel safe and protected by the men she would know. There must be a place where old flyers go, when their flying is finished, and their airspeed gets low. Where the whiskey is old, and the women are young, and songs about flying and dying are sung. Where you'd see all the fellows who'd flown west before, and they'd call out your name, as you came through the door. Who would buy you a drink, if your thirst should be bad, and relate to others, "He was quite a good lad". And then through the mist, you'd spot an old guy, you had not seen in years, though he taught you to fly. He'd nod his old head, and grin ear to ear, And say, "Welcome, my son, I'm pleased that you're here. For this is the place where the true flyers come, when their journey is over, and their war has been won.They've come here at last to be safe and alone, from the government clerk, and the management clone,Politicians and lawyers, the Feds and the noise, where all hours are happy, and they're all good ol' boys. You can relax with a cold one, maybe deal from a deck, this is heaven my son..... You've passed your last check!"

We will miss our dear neighbor, Bill, so much! We loved chatting with him and seeing his Irish eyes twinkle when he told us stories about flying (which he said was his life-long dream) exotic places and how he and his wife, Gloria, used to have many fun experienes flying segments together when they both worked for the airlines. Bill distinguished gentleman who would always jump to open a door for a lady. He never failed to call and thank us for a meal we sent to him when he was unable to get out. We only wish we could have spent more time with him before he became so ill. We cherish his memory and know he will be greatly missed. He certainly will be around this neighborhood! I go back to Astoria and Bill's earlier years. late 1940's early 1950's,when all you cared about was basketball, baseball, and football. We played many hours together. We both were tall and skinney and looked alike-in fact my mom hit him with a broom once thinking it was me. I joined the Navy soon after he did because he looked so sharp in the uniform. I will miss his good wit and welcomeing way. Many happy memories.

WE SPENT MANY LAYOVERS IN DIFFERENT CITIES SIGHT SEEING AND GOING TO BASEBALL GAMES AT YANKEE STATIUM, AS I COULD GET FREE TICKETS. WE ALWAYS WENT DUTCH ON EVERYTHING AND SPENT TIME LEARNING AND LAUGHING. OFCOURSE AFTER I LEFT THE AIRLINE BUSINESS AND MOVED TO AL.,I LOST TOUCH WITH A LOT OF PEOPLE. BUT THERE WERE A FEW I ALWAYS REMEMBERED AND THOUGHT HIGHLY OF AND BILL WAS ONE OF THOSE. I KNOW HE WILL BE MISSED BY MANY FAMILY MEMBERS AS WELL AS FRIENDS. I am so sorry to hear of Bill's passing.As a fellow employee of NAL and PAA I can tell you it was always a pleasure to fly with him. We are so saddened to learn of Bill's death. So glad we got to see Bill and Gloria at the luncheon in NC in August. We shared a lot over the 40 years at NAL and enjoyed many phone chats, mostly after we both retired. Lots of good memories. Other than being with his kids, I think Dad loved being in Bonita Springs, along the Florida west coast, with his brothers–Jimmy and John. And of course, he enjoyed when his sister Eileen could make it too.

Although each of his daughters was "Daddy's Little Girl" I love this picture of us at my graduation. My Dad had the most beautiful white hair and he was SO tall you could see him from anywhere. I never felt lost when I with him because he was a beacon.

We were so saddened to hear the news of Uncle Billy's passing.We wish there were words appropriate to express our desire to be of comfort to the family at this time. We all have our memories, and we must cherish the good ones. We believe miracles of healing can come from great tragedy, and the loss of Uncle Billy may serve, not only to bring him the peace he so desperately needed and sought, but perhaps in forging new family bonds and connections that will honor the best of Bill Ross in our hearts.
