Life Story for Henry J. Nowak

Henry J.  Nowak
Henry J. Nowak, 82, of Geddes, passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at Community General Hospital. Born in Utica on Tuesday, June 7, 1927, he was the son of Peter Nowak and Kathryn Bar Nowak. After residing in Utica for his early years, he moved to the Syracuse area in 1953.

Henry was a 1951 graduate of Clarkson College. He was a manager of engineering at Niagara Mohawk and worked there for more than 30 years, retiring in 1987. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, communicant of Holy Family Church and active participant at West Genesee School Board meetings. Henry was an avid downhill skier at Labrador and Toggenburg and enjoyed fishing at his camp on Lake Ontario. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Henry’s wife, the former Phyllis Graves, died December 3, 2003.

Surviving are his daughters and son-in-law, Christine Nowak of Syracuse and Susan and Dennis Sullivan of Elbridge; son, Mark Nowak of Syracuse; sister, Phyllis Langman of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren Julie Nowak of Alexandria Bay, Christopher, Joseph and Matthew Sullivan, all of Elbridge; several nieces and nephews and long-time friend, Bertha Kempisty of Fairmount.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday, August 8, 2009 at Holy Family Church. Relatives and friends may call Friday, August 7, 2009 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Henry will be laid to rest in the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
